By the team at Anyang Lonram Match Co., Ltd β supplying custom printed matchboxes since 2015.
A branded matchbox is one of the cheapest pieces of physical advertising a brand can make β and one of the longest-lived. A printed matchbox sits on a bar counter, a hotel vanity or a customer's mantelpiece for months, and every time someone strikes a match, they touch your logo. This guide walks through every decision you'll make when ordering custom matchboxes, in the order you'll need to make it.
1. Pick Your Box Style First
Before sizes or colours, decide on the construction β it drives everything else, including price:
- Slide box (drawer style) β an inner tray that slides out of a printed sleeve. Feels premium, and the sleeve offers five printable surfaces. Our best-seller for luxury matches and retail packaging.
- Hinged lid box β a classic rigid box with a flip lid. Common for candle brands and gift sets.
- Matchbook β flat, stapled cover over a bundle of matches. The cheapest per unit and the standard for restaurants and promo giveaways.
- Jar or bottle β glass, apothecary or rattan-woven vessels filled with long matches. A fast-growing retail category for home dΓ©cor.
2. Get the Size Right
Matchbox size follows stick length, and stick length follows use:
| Stick length | Typical use | Common box format |
|---|---|---|
| 40β50 mm | Table matches, restaurants, hotels | Matchbook, small slide box |
| 55β60 mm | Candles, general gift matches | Standard slide box (30β60 sticks) |
| 75β100 mm | Cigar lighting, BBQ, fireplaces | Long slide box, jars, tubes |
If in doubt, ask for a white sample of two sizes and compare them on your actual table or shelf β size mistakes are the single most common first-order regret we see.
3. Printing: Your Options, Honestly Compared
- Offset printing (CMYK) β full-colour artwork, gradients and photography. Lowest cost at volume; the default for matchbooks and slide sleeves.
- Foil stamping β metallic gold, silver or coloured foil pressed into the board. Adds real perceived value for a few cents per box; ideal for a single logo mark.
- Embossing / debossing β raised or recessed artwork you can feel. Often combined with foil for premium lines.
- Spot UV β a glossy raised layer over matte print. Subtle and modern.
Our rule of thumb: offset print the background, foil-stamp the logo. That combination covers 80% of the premium boxes we export.
4. Match Head Colour: The Detail Everyone Notices
The head colour is free real estate for your brand. We keep 17 stock colours on file β from classic red and black to pastels and white β with heads 01β15 dyed at no extra charge. Custom Pantone-matched head colours are possible for longer sticks. Read the full breakdown on the custom matchboxes page.
5. MOQ and What Actually Drives Price
Typical minimums: 5,000 boxes for slide and hinged formats, 10,000 pieces for matchbooks. Unit price is driven by four things, in order of impact:
- Box construction β a matchbook costs a fraction of a rigid slide box.
- Stick length and count β longer sticks and higher fill counts cost more, roughly linearly.
- Number of print colours and finishes β each extra foil or emboss adds setup cost, which spreads thin at low volume.
- Order quantity β the same box at 5,000 vs 50,000 units can differ by 30β40%.
Honest advice: don't chase the lowest unit price on your first order. Order the MOQ, test the market, then scale on reorder β artwork and specs stay on file, so reprints are one email.
6. Artwork: What We Need From You
Vector files (AI, PDF or EPS) make everything faster and sharper. If you only have a JPEG or PNG, our design team can redraw simple logos into print-ready vectors free of charge, within 48 hours β include your Pantone codes if brand colours matter. You'll always receive a digital proof to sign off before anything goes to press, and the first printed sheets are checked against it at the plant.
7. Sampling, Lead Time and Shipping
A typical first order runs like this: artwork confirmed in 1β2 days, pre-production sample or photo proof in 3β5 days, mass production in 10β15 days after approval, then 25β35 days by sea to the US or EU (or 5β7 days air, at a cost). Samples in hand before mass production take 5β7 days and are strongly recommended for first-time buyers.
We ship FOB Qingdao or Tianjin, or CIF/DDP if you prefer door delivery. Mixed pallets β several SKUs in one container β are normal for us.
Frequently Asked
Can I mix box styles in one order?
Yes β mixed pallets are standard. Each style keeps its own MOQ, but they can share one shipment.
Do matchboxes pass safety standards?
Heads are formulated to strike only on the prepared strip β the international safety standard. Raw materials are tested per EN 1783 parameters.
Can you ship to an Amazon FBA warehouse?
Yes. We carton and label to FBA requirements regularly, including barcode and box-weight limits.
How long do custom matchboxes last in storage?
Years, if kept dry. Humidity is the enemy of both board and strike strip β store boxes sealed in their export cartons until display.
